San Jose approves program to try streetlamp cameras in select areas

SAN JOSE — San Jose will begin talks with a tech company to install devices that could include surveillance cameras on some city street lamps despite concerns from some city officials and watchdog groups about privacy. “We’re obviously excited,” said Robert Praske, CEO of anyCOMM, which invented the technology. “We think it’s the right decision by the council to make.” The decision came following hours of debate Tuesday night about whether San Jose, a city that prides itself as the center of innovation, is ready for the new technology — especially since it does not have a privacy policy on the books. “I’m uncomfortable going forward without a data policy in place to know how the data and sounds would be retained and for how long,” said Councilman Johnny Khamis, who unsuccessfully urged his colleagues to adopt a policy earlier this year. The council ultimately voted 7-4 to allow anyCOMM, a tech company with offices in El Dorado Hills, Gold River and San Jose, to install...

Utility Companies Embrace Drones For Efficiency, Safety

On a hill overlooking Millerton Lake in Fresno County a group of workers are gathering around a cell tower. They’re watching a tiny white drone slowly circle the tower from the ground all the way to the top. Quasie Jones is with the drone imaging company  Skycatch . So what it’s doing is taking a picture every two seconds,” Jones says. “So by the end of it it’ll basically have probably like five or 600 photos. So then our technology renders that and creates a 3D model.” After the model of the tower is created the drone can then make decisions on its own on on whether there’s anything wrong. It does this by comparing previous photos and video of the tower with what’s recorded today. If there's anything off then it notifies AT&T. It’s a dangerous job that can take hours if done by a person . Art Pregler  with  AT&T’s Drone Program  says his team’s fed thousands of photos and video into an algorithm to teach the drone what to look for. “A technician w...

Honeywell launches its first home security camera, the Lyric C1

Honeywell is perhaps best known for its smart thermostat systems, with the Lyric system being the most consumer-friendly version. The company has now added to the Lyric family with a security camera in the form of the C1. The C1 is designed to work inside the home, and can either be placed on a flat surface or mounted to a wall. Front and centre is a wide-angle 720p camera that can record video at 30fps and can even work at night thanks to a night vision mode. Like other security cameras , the Lyric C1 will send a notification to your mobile phone via the Lyric app when it detects motion or hears any unusual sounds. It can also detect when a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm goes off, and will notify you in the same way. You will also get an email sent to the registered account holder. You can tell the camera to ignore certain objects in the room, such as a ceiling fan, so it doesn't constantly notify you when it detects motion.  You can talk through the camera thanks to a t...
