City launches new security camera initiative to fight crime

It’s no secret Albuquerque has a crime problem. Now the city is doing something about it, using security cameras as their weapons. The plan is to combine security cameras from business owners and residents into one large database, allowing law enforcement to keep a better eye on the city. For some business owners, there’s still some questions about the new initiative. “I came in on Sunday morning approximately at 10:00 a.m., to discover that my barbecue pit had been missing,” said Daniel Morgan, the owner of Peppers Ole Fashion Barbecue on San Pedro. In his nine years at that location, he had only experienced minor thefts, until this weekend. “I just felt very agitated and frustrated,” said Morgan. Morgan has a security camera, but unfortunately it didn’t catch the criminal. “Today we are announcing the SCAN system, which stands for Security Camera Analytical Network,” said Mayor Richard J. Berry. The Mayor’s Office, prosecutors, and law enforcement are joining ...

Bato on Parojinog raid: Cutting CCTV cameras wrong

MANILA, Philippines — Philippine National Police chief Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa said Monday that it was wrong for Crime Investigation and Detection Group operatives to cut the closed circuit television or CCTV cameras during the bloody raid which killed Ozamiz City Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog Sr. and 14 others. “Wala ako doon noong nangyari kaya hindi ko alam kung pinagtatanggal nga ‘yan (CCTV cameras), pero hindi tama,” Dela Rosa said in a press briefing at Camp Crame in Quezon City. Home security: more than a camera

There is a significant increase in the focus on home and personal security . This is according to Roy Alves, country manager of Axis Communications, who points to a steep surge in the deployment of home and residential security solutions. Alves adds that, whereas before the value of estates and houses was driven largely by location, today’s property prices are increasingly impacted by the level of its security, at times even more so than geography. “Crime is not abating,” says Alves. “People want to feel safe, they want to know that their homes and families are protected.” But, he stresses the importance of engaging a professional provider. “Although the right hardware is key, there is still so much more to security and surveillance than simply installing a camera.” And, with not all ‘providers’ privy to certain intricacies, this can, unfortunately, leave home owners with a false sense of security. Deploying a reputable solution, through a professional provider, will also all...

Rag picker finds Rs 16 lakh in demonetised currency

Hyderabad: On Thursday, at around 10 am, while collecting waste near the Vajpayee Nagar railway gate in Neredmet, a 58-year-old rag picker came across a heavy white opaque plastic bag containing Rs 16 lakh in demonetised currency notes. Gangubai, a resident of Vajpayee Nagar herself, usually collects wastes from the area to make a living. “The currency notes were found in a white plastic bag and were in Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denominations of banned currency notes. They were old notes and not newly printed,” said SI Srinivas Rao of Neredmet. Although there are no CCTV cameras in that area police officials are enquiring with locals for clues regarding the bag owner. “There is a CCTV camera near the rail track but it does not cover the area where the stash was found. We are che...

Denizens can expect more heavy rain over the two days as the monsoon has been strengthened by a low-pressure weather system over Bay of Bengal. U.S. appeals court upholds gag orders on FBI data surveillance

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. federal appeals court on Monday upheld nondisclosure rules that allow the FBI to secretly issue surveillance orders for customer data to communications firms, a ruling that dealt a blow to privacy advocates. A unanimous three-judge panel on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco sided with a lower court decision in finding that rules permitting the Federal Bureau of Investigation to send national security letters under gag orders are appropriate and do not violate the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution's free speech protections. Content distribution firm Cloudflare and phone network operator CREDO Mobile had sued the government in order to notify customers of five national security letters, or NSLs, received between 2011 and 2013. The FBI's use of NSLs has drawn increased scrutiny as new transparency laws have let companies publish some of the letters, which has shown the agency may have run afoul of ru...

Woman's selfie trip damages 10 crowns worth $2 lakh

A woman caused about $2,00,000 in damage when she knocked over about 10 pieces of artwork while taking a selfie at the 14th Factory Exhibition in Los Angeles. Video captured by a surveillance camera showed that the woman attempted to take a selfie with one of the displayed crowns. When she crouched down for the best angle, she suddenly fell backward and knocked one over and caused a domino effect, as all the art pieces were set closely to each other. All other pieces in that row were knocked over. Their value is estimated at $20,000 each. A spokeswoman of the 14th Factory confirmed to Fox News on Saturday that three sculptures were permanently destroyed, while others were partially damaged. Two bodies found in suitcases in Japan woods: media

Two bodies found stuffed inside suitcases abandoned in mountainous forest near Tokyo are suspected to be missing Chinese sisters, local media reported today. Police officers reportedly found the corpses folded inside the bags at two separate sites in the woods late yesterday. Police suspect that the bodies are those of two female Chinese restaurant workers, aged 22 and 25, who were living in Yokohama and missing since last week, according to reports. A man in his 30s caught on a surveillance camera at the sisters' apartment before they went missing has been identified as a suspect. Kanagawa prefectural police refused to comment yesterday's discovery when contacted by AFP. Grisly murder cases often grab headlines in Japan, though the country is known as one of the world's safest with an annual murder rate of less than one per 100,000 people. Last year, the body of a Chinese woman who had been missing for over two years was found inside a sui...

Australia’s planned decryption law would weaken cybersecurity

The Australian government plans to introduce new legislation forcing companies such as Google and Facebook to de-crypt messages in the name of fighting terrorism and other crimes. But the move will have serious implications for cybersecurity. In a press conference on Friday, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said the law would impose an obligation on technology companies to be able to provide Australian security agencies with access to encrypted user communications. Both he and Attorney-General George Brandis have insisted they are not asking for “back doors” to be built into encryption software. Yet they have not detailed how their goal can be achieved otherwise. Take an end-to-end encrypted messaging service like Signal. A server scrambles the original message, and the text can be de-scrambled only by a “key” that exists on the recipient’s phone. The company never sees the plaintext. The government’s message is that it’s only trying to keep the country safe, but ...

CCTV ends car snatchers’ run

A Honda Jazz fresh from the assembly line was being unloaded from a truck at the godown of a dealer in Fatehpur Beri, south Delhi, last week. Two armed men came from nowhere and snatched the car at gunpoint. But the law caught up with them after a petrol pump's CCTV camera recorded them buying fuel. The incident occurred on June 2 when six Honda Jazz cars were being brought from a factory in Rajasthan to the godown. Four cars had already been parked inside. When the fifth car was brought out, two men on a motorbike accosted the driver of the vehicle and accused him of hitting their motorbike with the car. Shakul, the employee, contested the claim. At this, one of them pulled out a pistol and pointed it at Shakul. He was asked to step out and the car was driven away. Police were informed and footage from CCTV cameras from several places was scanned. Police had a hunch that the snatchers must have bought fuel before planning the loot as brand-new car...
