Salar Jung Museum set to upgrade surveillance


Hyderabad: In a move aimed at ensuring better safety and protection for its priceless treasure troves that were collected from far and near, Salar Jung Museum has initiated the second phase of surveillance camera installation in the campus.
The enhanced network of high resolution CCTV camera, officials said, would help in round-the-clock surveillance in and around the heritage structure which houses one of the best antiquity collections of the world.
Museum officials said that the surveillance cameras so far were there only inside the museum. Apart from strengthening that coverage, works are on to getting an eye around the museum too.
“In this phase, we have decided to install the cameras outside the museum as well,” said Ravi Kumar, museum assistant executive engineer.
Nearly 130 new cameras are being installed in different vantage points while a thorough check of the existing cameras has also been taken up. “Where required, we will be getting the old surveillance camera network repaired,” he said.
While increasing the number of cameras, the museum is also getting the memory storage for the footage increased. “Our intention is to have the footage available for at least 30 days,” an official said.
Housing world’s biggest one-man collection of antiques, of Nawab Mir Yousuf Ali Khan Salar Jung-III, former prime minister of Nizam the VIIth, the museum on an average receives nearly 3,000 visitors, not only local, but also foreigners. Given the patronage which over the years has been on the rise, the officials said, the museum needed to be equipped with best surveillance system.
Recently, as a measure to protect the many artefacts that are on display, the museum authorities installed 300 fire alarms in addition to the existing 1,062 alarms present in various galleries of the museum.
The alarm system was installed to help detect and warn the management through visual and audio appliances in case of smoke, fire, carbon monoxide leak or other emergencies in the service rooms, such as power supply, AC and generator rooms.
